For the last few months, Jamie Fernandes and I explored the question: How do we teach music students to become self-directed musicians through the use of metacognition in practice?
We used a design thinking approach where we researched our question looking at different journal articles, as well as our own survey of 120 musicians. What we learned is that advanced musicians have more strategies they use when they practice, and use metacognition more. We decided to design a practice journal template for student usage because we believe this would help students have more guided practice sessions and learn to develop metacognition faster when it comes to practicing. Here is an infographic explaining our work:

We would love practicing teachers to use this resource and see how it works for them. I have shared the google docs in this blog so you can try them out and let us know how they are.
